Eye on the Prize

Caleb:

I once had a young man come to work at the firm and after a short time it was obvious that he wasn't enjoying being an accountant.  He came to work, but he wasn't content and he wasn't happy.  One day I pulled him into my office and asked him what he wanted out of his career.  He reluctantly told me that in five years he wanted to be golfing every day and only wanted to be working four hours a day.

If you were his boss knowing that the career he'd chosen required 8-10 hours of daily work for the next ten years, what advice would you have given him?

I simply said, "Then everything you do and every relationship you have, should be geared to that end."  That's good advice for anyone, you and me included.  The postscript is that he left the firm within a month of that meeting.  I don't know if he'll accomplish his goal, but he took the correct first step (accounting can't deliver that kind of lifestyle), and I wish him Godspeed.

Too often we get "caught up in the thick of thin things" and lose our bearing.  You should examine your bearing on a daily basis.  Your bearing is finding people and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Evaluate every situation and work to increase your efficiency in doing so.  Every interaction and every relationship can help you accomplish your goal.

Be awesome!  Love,

Dad
